Polperro, home of The Cornish Maids Shop is a small unspoilt fishing village in Cornwall, England where it is quite easy to step back in time. The village is made up of original fishing cottages nestled within a valley where narrow cobbled streets barely a car’s width thread the houses together. At the head of the valley there is a large car park from here it is only a short stroll into the village (no need to take the tram so save your money for some fudge!) from here you can wander through the village and browse the shops stocking local produce, confectionery, arts & crafts.
Although these days Polperro has only a small fleet of fishing boats the village is famous for its seafood, and its well worth a visit just to sample some of the great seafood in the pubs of Polperro. If history is your thing then why not visit the Polperro Heritage Museum where you can learn about the trials and tribulations of Polperro, Cornwall and discover tales of smuggling, pressgangs and even knitting!
From the village you can walk along the coastal paths once used for smuggling where the cliffs plunge into the sea revealing tidal pools and beaches that are usually empty, even in the height of summer. If your feeling up to it you can walk along the coastal paths to Looe, this is a five mile walk passing through Talland bay before reaching Hannafore beach in Looe, you can then catch one of the regular buses back to Polperro.
